‘Through the character of Lucien, Malle presents us with an uncertain portrayal with the collaborateur'. Talk about
" Despite a great ever increasing sum of books on the history of the Second World War generally and of Fascista rule in occupied The european countries in particular, there is still not any agreement around the exact which means of the term ‘collaboration. '”
From this affirmation it is crystal clear that the collaboration was a great undeniably ambiguous time in French history, much more than the rest of the Second World War. It was unclear as to whether the French wanted a cooperation or certainly not, as we find in John Malle's Lacombe Lucien. Simply by watching the film we see how Malle portrays a very distinct and clear picture of France through the collaboration displaying that there have been collaborators and that there were likewise resistors. Nonetheless it can be said that the clear image of France through the Second World War continue to does not remove the unconformity of the collaboration. What was the ratio of collaborators and resistors, how did persons become collaborators and how would this have an effect on France? Louis Malle clearly wished to illustrate the way people were easily influenced and for that reason manipulated in the collaboration through the Second World War. Paillette Malle details Lucien as " some thing so effective, so ambiguous” in a way that signifies perhaps the majority of youths becoming a member of the Gestapo in France. Indeed Paillette Malle provides a sense of ignorance within the young French contemporary society, whereby people only signed up with " accidentally” without knowing the consequences. As a young person, Lucien adjustments from becoming an ordinary children to as being a malicious component to society, somebody who does not think rationally yet does take action spitefully. Among the this combination between power and ambiguity can be portrayed through Lucien's personality throughout. At the beginning of the film we see Lucien as an ordinary peasant inside the South of France, leading a fairly regular and basic life. We then however see Lucien change, marked by the transform of his clothes via being quite scruffy and rural to smart and sophisticated. " Je m'en fiche” answers Lucien once M. Car horn asks what suit this individual prefers. This conveys a sense of unwillingness and nonchalance with the character, therefore showing that he will not actually care about the reason why for this movement in France. Lucien could possibly be seen as a result as a image for certain persons in Italy at this time.
